On Friday, December 17, 2010, 20 members of the 41st class of the Advanced Management Program (AMP) were awarded graduate certificates by the NDU iCollege’s Chancellor, Dr. Robert D. Childs. The graduation address was given by Lieutenant General William T. Lord, Chief of Warfighting Integration and Chief Information Officer, Office of the Secretary of the Air Force. Vice Admiral E. Rondeau, United States Navy, President of the National Defense University, and Ambassador Thomas C. During his address, Lieutenant General Lord spoke about this being the “Century of Cyber.” He explained that back in 1903 the Wright Brothers gave the world the first flight. Now, we are on the precipice of another first, Cyber Security, and that by the year 2020, more than 3 billion people will be on the Internet. “It is up to the new Chief Information Officers (CIO’s) to become subject matter experts not only on information assurance, but also to secure mission assurance,” said Lieutenant General Lord.

The AMP graduates represented mid-to senior-level military officers and civilians from the Department of Defense (Army, Air Force, Defense Information Systems Agency, Marine Corps), as well as the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Bureau of Indian Affairs/Department of Interior, National Geospatial Intelligence Agency, South Korean Army, Bulgarian Army, and the Czech Republic Intelligence Service.

During the ceremony, 20 AMP certificates, 20 Chief Information Officer (CIO) certificates, and seven Information Assurance 4011 certificates were awarded. Five of the graduating students were DoD Information Assurance Scholarship Program recipients, and two distinguished graduates were recognized by the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association’s (AFCEA) Mr. John Hovell. The distinguished graduates were Colonel Vaclav Zid, Czech Republic Intelligence Service and Mr. James Lee, United States Marines Corps. The class plaque was presented to Dr. Childs by Mr. Robert Joynson of Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC). After the ceremony, graduates, faculty/staff and special guests celebrated with a luncheon reception sponsored by the NDU Foundation.
