Dr. Brian A. Shott

Deputy Chancellor

A career member of the Senior Foreign Service, Brian joined the faculty of the College of Information and Cyberspace in August 2022.  Prior to joining the college, he was posted to the U.S. Mission to Saudi Arabia from 2017-2022, where he served as Counselor for Political Affairs, Acting Deputy Chief of Mission, and Public Affairs Counselor.  Previous to his tour at the Embassy in Riyadh, he served as Press Attaché in Cairo, as Cultural Affairs Attaché in Baghdad, and as Public Affairs Officer in Skopje, where his team supported post-communist transitions in the Balkan nation.  In Morocco, he was Deputy Political Counselor and Political-Military Affairs Officer, supporting one of the largest bilateral military engagement programs in Africa.  As Deputy Director for the OSCE in the Bureau of European Affairs, Brian managed the human dimension portfolio, promoting human rights and freedoms through the multilateral forum. 

Prior to joining the Foreign Service, Brian served as Assistant Professor and Assistant Dean in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Virginia.  He holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University, as well as a Master of Science in National Security Resource Strategy from the Eisenhower School at NDU.  Brian speaks Albanian, Arabic, Macedonian, and Serbian.  His wife, Dinka Masic, is also a Foreign Service Officer.
