Mark Stamilio is a Visiting Instructor and the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Faculty Chair at the National Defense University’s College of Information and Cyberspace.
Prior to joining the faculty of the College of Information and Cyberspace, Mr. Stamilio served as Principal Director in the Office of the Principal Cyber Advisor to the Secretary of Defense. In this role, he supported the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Cyber Policy, who serves concurrently as the Principal Cyber Advisor to the Secretary of Defense, in advising the Secretary on military cyber forces and activities; integrating Cyber Operations Forces activities relating to cyberspace operations, including associated policy and operational considerations, resources, personnel, technology development and transition, and acquisition; assessing and overseeing implementation of the Department of Defense cyber strategy and execution of the Department’s cyber posture review; and exercising authority, direction, and control with respect to the administration and support of United States Cyber Command, including readiness and organization of Cyber Operations Forces, cyber operations-peculiar equipment and resources, and civilian personnel.
Mr. Stamilio’s prior assignments in the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy included: Senior Policy Advisor and Staff Director, Department of Defense Cross-Functional Team on Anomalous Health Incidents; Principal Director, African Affairs; Deputy Director, Russia and Conventional Arms Control; Director, International Humanitarian Policy; Director, Counterterrorism Partnership Strategies; and Director, Detainee Policy.
Prior to joining the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy, Mr. Stamilio served as a Foreign Service Officer with the U.S. Department of State in Colombia, Paraguay, and the Office of the Ambassador-at-Large for War Crimes Issues, and as a U.S. Army Judge Advocate in Panama, Honduras, and Germany.
Mr. Stamilio received a Bachelor of Arts in Government, cum laude, from Georgetown University, a Juris Doctor from the Georgetown University Law Center, and a Master of Science in National Security Strategy from the National War College.
